Ricky Romero and the San Francisco Giants have agreed on a new minor-league contract as reported by Matt Eddy of Baseball America. The lefty, who turns 32 tomorrow, sat on the shelf for the majority of the 2016 season with an injury, only pitching eight innings for the Sacramento River Cats in two starts. He allowed four runs while striking out five and walking six in his little work.
Romero is highly unlikely to crack San Francisco’s starting rotation, much less the big league team itself, mostly due to his inability to stay healthy. His last full season at the major league level was in 2012, where over 181.0 innings he had a subpar 5.77 ERA while walking 5.22 per nine innings. Since the conclusion of that season, he has only thrown 166.2 innings in four years at the professional level.
During Spring Training before the 2016 season, Romero had a 3.18 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched. With San Francisco’s front office openly making changes to its bullpen, a solid outing next spring could be the gateway for Romero to suit once again up in a major league uniform.
