The front office of the San Francisco Giants did not wait for the 2016 season to fully come to a close before making its first offseason move, as according to Baseball America the team has signed 30-year-old first baseman and left fielder Kyle Blanks to a new minor-league deal.

The Pennsylvania native has struggled with a plethora of injuries throughout his career, namely a foot injury, and didn’t don the orange and black once last season despite a strong showing in Spring Training, missing the entire 2016 season.

Gregor Blanco indicated that he does not play to resign with the Giants and Angel Pagan is likely to follow his teammate right out of the door, leaving the Giants with a vacancy in left field and on the bench.

Although Blanks has been banged up numerous times, he’s shown flashes of his talent when he’s not on the DL, and it wouldn’t be out of the question for a healthy Blanks to find his way onto San Francisco’s bench to help out what may be a depleted outfield.

In 278 major league games, Blanks has accumulated 33 home runs and 111 RBIs with a slash line of .241/.322/.416 and a total WAR of 3.6. His career high in games played in a season stands only at 88.

San Francisco is far from done with its offseason shopping and will most likely take a shot in attempting to sign some of baseball’s top tier offensive bats. If the Giants fall short in that pursuit, it will be an interesting development to see where Blanks begins his 2017 season.
