With Sergio Romo heading to the 15-day DL, the Giants have called up Derek Law to take to replace Romo and keep San Francisco's pitcher count at thirteen.
Law, 25, was drafted by the Giants out of Miami-Dade College in the ninth round of the 2011 draft. The right-hander has been a reliable reliever in San Francisco's farm system. In 2014, Law pitched 28 innings with a 2.57 ERA for Richmond, while striking out 9.32 per nine innings and walking 4.50 per nine innings, and in 2015, he pitched 25.2 innings with a 4.56 ERA, while striking out 11.22 per nine innings while only walking 2.81 per nine innings. The right-hander struggled during Spring Training this past year, posting a 4.76 ERA in 5.2 innings of work, but in Sacramento, Law has only pitched three innings and has yet to allow a run.
Law's arsenal consists of a solid fastball with sink, a splitter, and a slider, his best pitch, all of which he knows how to use to strike out batters. He is unlikely to inherit Romo's role of the late-inning set-up man; that job will go to Hunter Strickland. His role has yet to be determined, but currently, he is at the bottom of the bullpen totem pole.
